SportsEngine Alternative for Cheer Teams, Built Only for Cheer.

SportsEngine Motion runs registration, payments and league scheduling across every youth sport. That breadth is the point, and it is also why the competitive cheer season sits outside it. Cheerleaders covers that season: scored tryouts, levels and progressions, comp deadlines and uniform resale.

Short answer: SportsEngine Motion is a multi-sport platform for online registration, payment collection, league scheduling and public team websites. It no longer sells a monthly subscription: it costs $295 to start and then takes a 1 percent technology fee plus 2.9 percent and $0.30 card processing on every transaction. Cheerleaders is a cheer-only team platform (tryout score sheets, level and stunt tracking, competition season, uniform marketplace) priced from $29 a month per team. They overlap on roster, attendance and messaging, and almost nowhere else. If you need to replace registration and league operations, compare SportsEngine against another all-sports platform. If your competitive cheer season is the mess, that is the gap Cheerleaders fills, usually alongside SportsEngine rather than instead of it.

What it costs

SportsEngine dropped the subscription and priced everything on payments.

This page used to describe SportsEngine HQ tiers at $0 and $69 a month. That offer is gone. As of August 30, 2026, sportsengine.com/hq/pricing redirects to SportsEngine Motion, and Motion is priced on a completely different model: $295 once to get started, no monthly subscription at all, and then a 1 percent technology fee plus 2.9% and $0.30 card processing applied to each transaction. If you are reading an older comparison that still quotes $69 a month, it is out of date. The practical effect of the change is that your bill now scales with the money you collect rather than sitting flat. A program processing $20,000 of fees in a month pays $200 in technology fee alone, before card processing, where the old Premium plan would have been $69. Small and seasonal clubs come out ahead, and busy gyms collecting real tuition do not. What no version of this adds is a single cheer-competitive feature, because SportsEngine is built to register and schedule athletes, not to run a competitive cheer season.

Re-verified September 8, 2026 and every figure above still stands. Two things did change. First, SportsEngine changed hands: a banner across the pricing page now reads "SportsEngine is now part of PlayMetrics", and PlayMetrics dates the acquisition to May 2026 on its own announcement page. Second, the pricing FAQ carries a clause worth reading before you pay the $295: if after 90 days you have yet to use SportsEngine Motion for electronic payment processing, they reserve the right to disable access to the platform. If your merchant account is contracted elsewhere and staying there, that rules the product out regardless of features. Cancelling otherwise means 30 days notice to your account manager, with no long term subscription and no published termination charge. The full SportsEngine pricing breakdown works out the exact collections level where the 1 percent fee overtakes each subscription in this market.

Where SportsEngine wins

SportsEngine is a serious platform backed by NBC Sports Next, and we do not replace the parts below. If these are your problem, buy SportsEngine.

Registration and payments

Online sign-up forms, waivers and fee collection, the enrollment engine of a club or league. Cheerleaders collects no money for you, so if registration is the pain, this is the answer.

Leagues and websites

League scheduling, game results and public sport websites across everything an organization runs. If you manage a multi-sport club, that breadth is genuinely useful.

Compliance and screening

Background screening and SafeSport-style tracking that a national governing body expects. We only do cheer, on purpose, and leave screening to a platform built for it.

Where Cheerleaders wins

A registration platform has no opinion about a full-up.

Tryouts

Scored tryouts that hold up

Weighted cheer tryout score sheets, judges scoring independently, results ranked live and defensible line by line.

Levels

Know who is ready

Track tumbling and stunt progressions against cheer level requirements instead of guessing at a practice.

Comps

Competition season handled

A cheer competition schedule with registration deadlines, packing lists, routine timing and results.

Budget

Uniforms back into budget

Resell outgrown sets in the cheer uniforms marketplace instead of a parent Facebook group.

Who should switch

Add Cheerleaders if:

  • Your competitive teams are the part SportsEngine has no answer for.
  • Tryouts are scored on paper and totaled with a calculator.
  • Nobody can tell you who has a standing full without asking a coach.
  • Comp registration deadlines live in somebody's phone notes.
  • Outgrown uniforms pile up in a closet instead of turning back into money.

Stay on SportsEngine if:

  • Online registration and fee collection are why you bought software.
  • You run cheer next to football, soccer or basketball in one club.
  • A public league website and game scheduling matter more than the mat.
  • Background screening and SafeSport tracking are a requirement.

To be clear about the choice: we are not asking you to stop registering athletes through SportsEngine. We are asking why your season still runs on a spreadsheet.

Questions coaches ask

What is the best SportsEngine alternative for cheer?

It depends on the part that is failing. For online registration and league scheduling, another all-sports platform is the like-for-like swap. For the competitive cheer season, Cheerleaders is the alternative, and it is additive: keep registration where it is and move the team side over.

How much does SportsEngine cost?

SportsEngine has moved off monthly subscriptions. Read on August 30, 2026, SportsEngine Motion costs $295 once to get started and then charges no monthly subscription, taking a 1 percent technology fee plus 2.9% and $0.30 card processing on each transaction instead. The older HQ tiers at $69 a month are no longer the live offer. Confirm current figures on sportsengine.com.

Is SportsEngine good for cheerleading?

It is good at what cheer shares with any youth sport: online registration, payment collection, scheduling, background screening and a public website. It has no tryout scoring, no cheer level or stunt tracking, no competition-season workflow and no uniform marketplace, so competitive programs run those parts outside it.

Does SportsEngine have a free plan?

Not any more, and for a small club the replacement may be better. SportsEngine Motion carries no monthly subscription at all. You pay $295 to get started, then a 1 percent technology fee plus 2.9% and $0.30 processing on money you actually collect. There is no recurring software bill in a quiet month, but the percentage applies to every dollar. The retired Premium plan was $69 a month and adds online registration, a branded team app and websites. Confirm current terms on sportsengine.com.

SportsEngine vs Cheerleaders: which do I need?

If your problem is registering athletes, collecting fees and scheduling leagues, SportsEngine. If your problem is tryouts, levels, comp deadlines and uniforms, Cheerleaders. Many programs want both, because neither product does the other one's job.

Can I use Cheerleaders alongside SportsEngine?

Yes, and it is the usual setup. SportsEngine keeps registration, payments and league scheduling. Cheerleaders takes rosters and attendance, tryouts, practice plans, level tracking and comp season. Nothing about registration overlaps, so there is no migration to plan.
