Short answer: a cheerleading stunt group has four positions, and a fifth when a coach adds one. The flyer is lifted into the air and holds the body positions. Two bases, a main base and a side base, carry the flyer feet and produce the lift. The backspot stands behind the stunt, calls the count, holds the ankles, keeps the group vertical and is responsible for the flyer head and shoulders on every catch. A front spot faces the stunt and adds hands under the flyer feet or ankles when the group needs support. None of these positions has a height or weight standard anywhere in the sport. What separates them is a different physical job: bases produce force, flyers control their own body in the air, and the backspot controls the timing and owns the safety of the landing.

The stunt group

Four positions, four completely different jobs.

Most explanations of cheerleading positions describe where each athlete stands. That is the least useful way to think about it, because standing in the right place is the easy part. The reason a stunt holds or drops is that four people are each doing a different job at the same moment, and if any one of them does a different job than the one they own, the stunt fails in a predictable way. Here is the group described by what each person is accountable for.

Terminology varies by program. Some gyms call the side base a secondary base, and some call the front spot a third base. The jobs are the same everywhere. What is not negotiable is the backspot, because USASF level rules require a spotter at specific heights and the rule is written in terms of what the position does, not what your program calls it.

The flyer

The flyer is picked for body control, not for size.

The single most persistent myth in the sport is that the flyer is the smallest athlete on the team. It gets repeated because it is a convenient first sort at a tryout, and because it is visibly true on a lot of teams. It is still the wrong criterion. A flyer who cannot hold a tight, stacked line makes herself heavier, because a loose body redistributes weight away from the bases hands every time it moves. Coaches who have based will tell you the same thing: a heavier athlete who stays perfectly still is easier to hold than a lighter one who does not.

There is no governing body standard for flyer height or weight. USASF does not publish one, the age grid is organized by birth year rather than by size, and no state high school association sets one either. Anything you read that gives an ideal flyer weight is somebody making it up, and in a sport where most athletes are minors that is worth being blunt about. What a coach should actually be assessing is four things: whether the athlete can hold a hollow, braced body under load, whether they stay over the bases hands rather than drifting, whether they can find the floor when a stunt breaks, and whether they stay calm doing it.

Cheer flyer body positions, by name

The body positions are the vocabulary of flying. Every one of them is a variation on the same problem: stand on one leg, on a moving platform, several feet in the air, and stay stacked while you move the other leg somewhere difficult. They get harder in roughly this order, though the flexibility demands differ enough that athletes rarely learn them in a strict sequence.

A point flyer is not a body position. It is the flyer placed at the front or center of a formation, usually the most consistent one on the team, because that stunt is what a judge looks at first. The skills a flyer needs to get there are the same ones tracked on the per athlete skill sheet, and the flexibility work behind them sits in cheerleading conditioning.

The bases

Main base and side base do not split the flyer in half.

Two bases hold one foot each, and the instinct is to treat them as mirror images. They are not. The main base takes the whole foot and is the reference point for the stunt: where the main base puts the platform is where the stunt lives. The side base takes the heel and the outside of the foot, and the entire job is to match, not to lead. A side base who initiates the timing is the most common reason a group twists on the way up, because two people driving on slightly different counts turns a lift into a rotation.

The physical demand on a base is the one genuinely measurable thing in this whole discussion, and it is larger than most programs plan for. The 2025 systematic review of cheerleading injuries reports bases taking 2.8 to 3.5 times body weight through the lumbar joints during stunting, and absorbing roughly 63 percent more landing impact force than flyers. That is not a technique problem to be coached away. It is the job. It is also the reason base conditioning should look like a lifter warm up, hips and posterior chain and bracing, rather than like the flexibility work the flyers are doing on the other side of the mat.

Three habits fix most basing problems before they become falls. Drive from the legs and stop when the arms lock, rather than pressing the last few inches with the shoulders. Keep the hands under the flyer center of mass instead of under wherever the foot has drifted, which means moving your feet rather than reaching. And hold the dip count out loud with the backspot until the whole group is bored of hearing it, because a shared count is what makes two bases behave like one.

The backspot

The backspot runs the stunt group and owns the landing.

Back spot in cheer is the position most often given to whoever is left over, and it is the position that should be assigned first. The backspot calls the count, so the group timing is theirs. On the load in they take the flyer waist and carry real weight, which is why the position rewards strength and not just height. Once the stunt is up they hold the ankles, keep the group vertical, and are usually the only person who can see the flyer body line and the bases hands at the same time.

Then there is the part that matters most. On a cradle the flyer must be caught by at least three of the original bases, and one of them has to be at the head and shoulder area. That is the backspot. Under the USASF rules for basket tosses, the same requirement applies: caught in a cradle by at least three original bases, one at the head and shoulder area. The catastrophic injury data explains why the rule is written that way. Among catastrophic cheerleading injuries, 52 percent involve the head and 32 percent the cervical spine. The backspot is the position standing between a routine fall and that outcome.

The one habit worth drilling

Teach backspots to call a stunt down early and reward them for it in front of the team. Most groups have a culture where pulling a wobbling stunt down feels like quitting, so the backspot waits, and the fall that follows happens from full extension instead of from prep level. Falls from 4 to 11 feet caused 87 percent of severe injuries in the review. Every foot the backspot takes off the fall height is the single cheapest safety intervention available to a program.

The fifth athlete

When a front spot helps, and when it hides a problem.

A front spot, sometimes called a third base, stands facing the stunt and adds hands under the flyer feet or ankles. Used well, it is the reason a group can safely learn a skill that is at the edge of its ability: it adds support exactly where a new flyer is least stable and gives the coach a second set of eyes from the front. Programs also use a front spot when the numbers work out that way, since a squad rarely divides evenly into groups of four.

The failure mode is subtle. A group that always has a front spot never finds out whether the two bases can actually hold the stunt, and the first time it performs without one, at a competition, on a different surface, the skill collapses. The fix is not to remove the front spot. It is to plan the removal: build the skill with five, then run it with four in practice weeks before anyone performs it, and keep a record of which groups have hit it without the extra support. That last part is exactly the sort of thing that disappears from memory between August and January unless it is written down.

The rules

How many spotters your level actually requires.

This is the part almost no positions article covers, and it is the part that decides how you build groups. Spotter requirements are written into the USASF 2026-2027 All Star Cheer Rules by level and by height, and they change what a group of four can legally attempt. If you are assigning positions for a competitive team, assign them against this table rather than against how the groups look.

Two rules apply across every level and both affect who you can put where. Required catchers and spotters must be stationary, must keep visual contact with the top person throughout the entire transition, and may not be involved in any other skill or choreography when the transition is initiated. The evidence

Where the load actually lands, in numbers.

Ask a room of cheerleaders which position is hardest and you will get an argument. The research is less ambiguous, and it points away from the position most people name. These figures come from a 2025 systematic review of cheerleading injuries, and they are worth knowing before you assign anyone to anything.

Two things follow from this for a coach assigning positions. Bases need strength and landing mechanics programmed for them specifically, not the general team warm up. And the biggest available safety improvement is not a position change, it is coaching qualification and spotter staffing, both of which are decisions made by the program rather than by the athletes.

The coach job

A method for assigning stunt group positions.

Position assignment goes wrong in the same way every season. Groups get set in the first week on the basis of who is friends with whom and who looks like a flyer, then nobody revisits it, and by December two groups carry the routine while a third is quietly avoided in choreography. Here is a sequence that avoids that.

Assign backspots first

Pick the athletes with the best judgment and the fastest reactions and place them before anyone else. The backspot is a rules requirement at most heights, so a group without a good one is capped no matter how strong the bases are.

Test flyers on the floor, not in the air

Hold a body position on one leg on the ground with eyes closed, then on a low surface. Body control shows up there in thirty seconds, and it tells you more than a single successful liberty on a good day with a strong group underneath.

Pair the bases by timing

Match a main base and a side base who can hold a shared count, then keep that pair together. Base pairs are the part of a group that improves most with continuity, and reshuffling them mid season resets the timing every time.

Write down what each group has hit

Per group, per skill, with the date and whether it was with or without a front spot. Choreography decisions in November should be made from that record, not from an impression of how a group looked in September.

What are the flyer body positions called?

The common flyer body positions are the liberty (one leg, free leg bent at the knee), heel stretch (free leg pulled up to the side by the heel), scorpion (free foot pulled behind the head with both hands), bow and arrow (a heel stretch with the arm threaded through), arabesque and scale (free leg extended behind), and the needle, which is the deepest of them. Each one is limited by a different joint, which is why the heel stretch and scorpion flexibility work that gets an athlete into one will not get her into the other.

How many people are in a cheer stunt group?

Four is standard: a flyer, two bases and a backspot. A fifth athlete, the front spot or third base, is added for heavier loads, for newer flyers and whenever a coach wants an extra set of hands on a skill being learned. Some elite stunts use a single base with a backspot, and partner stunt pairs in coed use one base and one flyer.

How many spotters does a stunt need?

Under the USASF 2026-2027 rules it depends on the level and the height. Level 1 requires a spotter for prep level and above and for floor stunts. Level 2 requires one above prep level and for floor stunts. Levels 3 through 6 require one above prep level, plus a spotter for each top person in single based stunts with multiple top persons.

Can a flyer also be a base?

Yes, and on most school squads athletes have to. Rosters are rarely large enough for anyone to hold one position all season, and pyramids often need a flyer from one group to base in another. Athletes who can do both are the most useful people on a team, because they make a group rebuildable when somebody is absent or hurt.
