Inside a lesson
How a good private lesson runs
Good coaches teach a skill in progressions: each step is solid before the next one starts. That is what keeps athletes safe and makes progress stick.
- 1 Warm up and mobilityWrists, shoulders, back and ankles take the load in tumbling. Ten minutes here prevents most small injuries.
- 2 Drills for the skillShapes, jumps into the mat, walkovers on a barrel or a wedge. The coach finds the one piece holding the skill back.
- 3 Spotted attemptsThe coach spots until the athlete is consistent, then fades the spot step by step.
- 4 ConditioningShort strength work for the muscles the skill needs, like core and shoulder stability.
- 5 HomeworkTwo or three drills to repeat safely at home or at practice until the next lesson.

Former college, pro and all-star athletes list coaching as a skill on a free profile. Gyms and teams invite you, and you apply to lesson offers on the gig board.
How long is a private cheer lesson?
Most private lessons run 30 or 60 minutes. Thirty minutes suits one focused skill, like a standing back handspring. An hour leaves room for a warm up, drills, spotted attempts and conditioning.
Where do private tumbling lessons take place?
On a spring floor or a sprung tumbling track at a gym, with mats and room to spot. A lawn or a hard floor is not a safe place to learn new tumbling.
What should I look for in a private coach?
Adult coaches who have competed at a high level, can spot the skill you are learning, and hold a current coaching safety credential. Ask how they build progressions before you book.
Who books the coach on Cheerleaders?
Gyms, school programs, teams and families post an offer on a business plan. Every coach who can apply is 18 or over.
