No skill in cheerleading carries as much weight as the back handspring. It is the gate to Level 2, it is what a tryout sheet means when it asks about tumbling, and it is the thing a ten year old will tell you they want more than anything else in the gym. It is also the skill that gets rushed more than any other, because the pressure to have it is enormous and the pressure to build it properly is nonexistent.
This is the coach's version. What the skill is actually made of, the order the pieces go in, how the spot works and gets faded, why arms collapse, and an honest timeline you can give a parent who has been told somewhere else that it takes six weeks.
What skills do you need before a back handspring?
A handstand held with a straight line, a bridge with straight arms and open shoulders, a bridge kickover, a back walkover, and a hollow hold that does not break. Those are not warm ups, they are the component parts. A back handspring is essentially a jump backward into a handstand shape that snaps down, so an athlete missing the handstand is missing the middle of the skill.
It is worth being specific about why each one is on the list, because coaches who treat them as a generic readiness checklist tend to let a weak one through:
- Handstand. This is the position the athlete passes through upside down. If it is banana shaped on the floor, it will be banana shaped in the air, where there is no time to correct it.
- Bridge with straight arms. The limiting factor is almost never the back. It is shoulder flexion. An athlete who cannot open the shoulders in a bridge will land with the hands too close to the feet and no room to push.
- Bridge kickover. The first time the athlete moves through inversion under their own power and has to push the floor away. It builds the block.
- Back walkover. Teaches the backward travel and the fear management, slowly, with the hands already on the floor.
- Hollow hold. The snap down is a hollow position. Without it the athlete lands arched, which is where the lower back pain in young tumblers comes from.
The phase that actually decides the skill
Ask most athletes what a back handspring is and they will describe the part where their hands hit the floor. Ask a good tumbling coach and they will describe the two tenths of a second before that.
The takeoff is a sit and a jump backward. The athlete sits back over the heels as if reaching for a chair that is slightly too far away, keeping the shins close to vertical, then jumps backward and up. Two things go wrong here and they account for most failed handsprings. The first is sitting down instead of back, which puts the knees over the toes and leaves nowhere to travel. The second is throwing the head back to find the floor, which pulls the chest open, kills the jump and turns the skill into a slow backbend that lands on the head.
The arms go with it. They swing down and back on the sit, then drive up and past the ears on the jump. The athlete should feel like they are jumping over something behind them, not falling into it. This is all trainable standing on a floor with no tumbling involved at all, which is exactly why it should be trained that way for weeks before anything inverts.
Back handspring drills, in the order they should be used
The drills below run roughly in sequence. The point of every one of them is to let the athlete feel one piece of the skill without carrying the whole thing.
- Seated rocks and sit backs. From standing, sit back to a chair or a stacked mat, then stand. Then sit back and jump backward onto a mat, landing seated. This trains the direction of travel with no inversion at all.
- Wall handstand holds. Chest to wall, walking the feet up, holding a straight line. This fixes the shoulder angle that later stops the arms from collapsing.
- Hollow rocks and arch rocks. The two shapes the skill alternates between, trained on the floor until they are automatic.
- Barrel or incline shaping. Going backward over a barrel mat lets the athlete feel the arched passing position and the snap down without supporting their own weight through the hands. This is the single most useful piece of equipment for the skill.
- Tumble track and trampoline repetitions. The soft surface buys time in the air and forgives an imperfect landing while the shape is still being learned.
- Handspring to a stack of mats. Reduces the distance the athlete has to travel and lets the coach fade the spot.
- Standing handspring on floor, spotted, then unspotted. The last step, and the coach's call, never the athlete's.
Notice what is not on that list: repetition of the full skill badly. Volume before shape is how a program makes a bad handspring permanent, and a habit built over three hundred repetitions takes longer to remove than it took to build.
How do you spot a back handspring?
The standard spot is from the side, kneeling or in a squat, with one hand at the athlete's lower back and the other at the back of the thigh. The spotter lifts and guides the hips over rather than pushing the shoulders. Hand placement changes with the athlete's size, strength and stage, and the spot is faded gradually rather than removed in one session.
Two things matter more than technique here. The first is that the spot has to shrink on a schedule. A spotter who keeps lifting long after the athlete can block is training dependence, and the athlete will fail the first time the hands come off. The second is coaching qualification, which turns out to be the single biggest safety variable in the sport. A 2025 systematic review of cheerleading injuries found that highly qualified coaching teams reduced injury risk by 50 percent and moderately qualified teams by 40 percent, and recommended at least one qualified spotter per five athletes. No mat purchase comes close to that effect size.
Why do my arms collapse in a back handspring?
Almost always shoulder angle rather than arm strength. If the athlete reaches back with the hands instead of driving the arms past the ears, the hands land underneath the shoulders and the elbows have to bend to take the load. Fix the overhead position with wall handstand holds and hollow rocks, then reintroduce the skill over a barrel so the shape is felt before it is loaded.
This is worth catching early for a reason beyond aesthetics. Wrists and hands account for 15.6 to 19.3 percent of cheerleading injuries, and a handspring that lands on bent arms puts the load through the wrist at a bad angle several hundred times a season. The correction is cheap now and expensive later.
How long does it take to learn a back handspring?
Most athletes need 6 to 12 months of consistent training at two or three sessions a week. An athlete who already owns a handstand, a bridge kickover and a back walkover can get there in a few months. One starting from nothing should plan on a year.
Be suspicious of any clinic that promises the skill in a month to an athlete with no tumbling background. It is achievable to produce something that looks like a back handspring in that time, by spotting it heavily and skipping the bridges and handstands. What comes out the other side is a skill the athlete cannot do alone, cannot repeat under pressure, and cannot safely build a tuck on top of. The foundation skipped in week two is the one that fails in month eight.
What age is safe to learn a back handspring?
Most athletes begin between ages 6 and 12, when strength and body awareness catch up to the demand. Coaches are cautious with children five and under for a specific mechanical reason: their arms are often barely long enough to reach past their heads, so the block that is supposed to protect the neck is not available yet. Readiness matters more than age, and a strong nine year old with clean shapes is a better candidate than a rushed six year old.
Can you learn a back handspring at home?
No, and this is the one place to be blunt. A back handspring travels backward into an inverted position onto the hands, and a failed one lands on the head, neck or wrists. It needs a qualified coach, proper matting and a soft surface such as a tumble track or resi mat. Conditioning and shape work can be done at home. The skill itself cannot.
The surface numbers make the case better than a warning does. A spring floor has a critical safety height of roughly 11 feet, against about 6 inches for concrete. That is a 22 fold difference, and a living room carpet is much closer to the concrete end of that range than to the gym end.
What level is a back handspring in cheer?
A single back handspring makes an athlete legal at USASF Level 2. Handspring series in a running pass is also Level 2, while series handsprings in standing tumbling wait until Level 3. It is the single most consequential skill in the level system, because it is the gate between floor contact tumbling and everything that follows.
The current rules add restrictions worth knowing before choreography starts. At Level 2 nothing may twist or turn after a back handspring step out, and no jump skill may connect to a handspring. What this means for a program, not just an athlete
A back handspring is where a gym's admin problems become visible. It is the most requested private lesson in the building, the most common reason a family books an evaluation, and the skill parents ask about most often at the front desk. Most gyms handle all of that by text message and a paper notebook, which works until it does not. If you are fielding a steady stream of those requests, moving the intake and the evaluation booking onto something that qualifies and schedules the enquiry automatically takes a real chunk of work off whoever is currently answering the phone between classes.
The other half is knowing where every athlete actually is. Who owns the bridge kickover, who is cleared for unspotted floor, who has been on the tumble track for four months without progressing. That information lives in the heads of whichever coach ran the class, and it evaporates the moment that coach leaves. Written down per athlete, it becomes a list you can filter at placement time instead of a conversation you have to reconstruct.
