Cheer Competition Packing List for Athletes and Coaches

By the Cheerleaders coaching team · Updated July 25, 2026 · Athlete bag, beauty kit and coach emergency kit

Comp day rarely goes wrong in a big way. It goes wrong in small ones: the bow left on the kitchen counter, the phone that died in the warm-up room, the one athlete with the wrong shoes. This is the full cheer competition packing list, split the way a well-run team actually packs it, into the athlete bag, the hair and makeup kit, and the coach emergency kit. Pack against it the night before, not the morning of. If you are still mapping which events you are attending, start with the 2026 cheer competition season guide and work backward from the first performance date.

What do you need for a cheer competition?

Every athlete needs their complete uniform, competition shoes, the exact team bow, hair and makeup supplies, and a warm cover-up. Coaches carry the shared team bag with music, a repair and first-aid kit, medical forms and the day schedule. The list below breaks that into three bags so nothing lands on one person and nothing gets missed.

The athlete bag

This is the bag each cheerleader is responsible for, and the one most likely to be short an item. Lay everything out on a bed the night before and check it off physically. A packed bag standing by the door beats a rushed search at 6 a.m.

  • Full competition uniform. Shell, skirt or bodysuit, briefs and bodyliner, all confirmed clean and the right size the week before, not the morning of. Growth spurts are the usual culprit, and a replacement piece is far easier to source in October than the week of a March event, which is why programs keep used cheer uniforms in circulation.
  • Competition shoes. The team's approved shoes, laced and broken in. A spare pair of clean white socks helps too.
  • The exact team bow. The single most-forgotten item in cheer. Pack a backup bow if the team has one.
  • Warm-up gear. Team jacket, joggers or leggings and a cover-up to keep the uniform clean and the athlete warm until performance.
  • Water and clean snacks. Water bottle, plus light snacks that will not stain: pretzels, bananas, plain crackers. Nothing red, orange or greasy near the uniform.
  • Personal medications and inhaler. Anything the athlete needs during a long day, in the bag and known to the coach.
  • Warm layer and a small blanket. Arenas run cold, and athletes wait a long time between warm-up and awards.

The hair and makeup kit

Cheer hair and makeup has to survive warm-up, a full routine and hours of waiting, then still look sharp for awards. Build one shared beauty kit and one small personal kit per athlete for touch-ups.

Category Pack
HairGel, strong-hold hairspray, teasing comb, at least 20 bobby pins, extra hair ties, the bow and a backup bow
FaceTeam-standard makeup, setting spray, blotting sheets, cotton swabs, a small mirror
Touch-upTravel hairspray, a few spare bobby pins and one extra bow in each athlete's personal bag
SkinDeodorant, a hair tie on the wrist, band-aids for blisters, clear lip balm

Do hair and makeup before you leave home or at a fixed time on arrival, and assign one or two parents as the touch-up crew so it is not the coaches doing bobby pins ten minutes before the team takes the floor.

The coach emergency kit

This is the bag that saves the day when something breaks. One coach owns it, it lives in the same place every competition, and it gets restocked the week after each event.

  • Music on two devices. The routine track on a primary and a backup device, both fully charged, plus the correct adapter. Never travel with one copy.
  • Repair kit. Safety pins, a small sewing kit, double-sided fashion tape, extra bows, spare hair ties, clear nail polish for runs, and scissors.
  • First-aid basics. Athletic tape, pre-wrap, band-aids, instant cold packs, ibuprofen and acetaminophen for adults, and any team-approved supplies.
  • Athlete medical and release forms. Printed and in the bag. Some events also ask a program to show proof of coverage before it competes or travels, and keeping your certificate of insurance current means you are not scrambling for a document the week of the event.
  • The day schedule and roster. Warm-up rotation, performance time, awards time and a printed team roster with emergency contacts.
  • Cash and a portable charger. Small bills for parking and admission, and a battery pack, because arena outlets are always taken.

What should you not bring to a cheer competition?

Leave loose glitter, colored or sugary drinks and greasy food anywhere near the uniform. Do not bring jewelry, which is illegal to compete in under nearly every rule set and gets athletes pulled from the floor. Leave valuables and anything irreplaceable at home, because warm-up rooms are crowded and things walk off. Water and light, colorless snacks are the only things that should be close to a competition uniform.

How early should you arrive at a cheer competition?

Arrive 90 minutes to two hours before your listed performance time. That window covers check-in, finding your warm-up rotation, a hair and makeup touch-up, and stretch and warm-up blocks, with a cushion in case the event runs ahead. Competitions very commonly run early, so treat your scheduled time as the latest you might perform, not the earliest. Build the buffer in and you never take the floor cold.

A comp-day timeline that works

When What happens
Night beforePack all three bags against this list, charge both music devices, lay out uniforms
2 hours beforeArrive, check in, locate warm-up room and floor, confirm rotation time
90 min beforeHair and makeup touch-up, athletes in warm-ups, coach counts heads against the roster
45 min beforeStretch, then move through your warm-up rotation, remove jewelry, final bow check
10 min beforeCover-ups off, line up, quiet focus, music device handed to the sound table
AfterCool down, stay for awards as a team, restock the emergency kit at home this week

The whole day is easier when the schedule lives somewhere every parent can see it instead of in one coach's phone. That is what a shared cheer competition schedule is for: performance times, warm-up rotations, packing reminders and results in one place, so forty families are not texting the same three questions on the drive there. Our 2026 cheer competition guide covers the season calendar and how registration deadlines work.

A note for coaches: make the list a team habit

The best programs do not re-invent this every weekend. They keep one master packing list, hand it to families at the season parent meeting, and repost it the week of each competition. New cheer parents have never done this before and will pack exactly what you tell them to pack, so the more specific the list, the fewer forgotten bows you deal with. Store the athlete medical forms and emergency contacts once, on each athlete's profile, and print the current set before you leave rather than hunting for last year's paper.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need for a cheer competition?

Each athlete needs their full uniform, competition shoes, the exact bow, hair and makeup supplies, and a warm cover-up. Coaches carry the team bag: music on two devices, a repair and first-aid kit, athlete medical forms, and the day schedule. Pack against a written list the night before.

What should you not bring to a cheer competition?

Skip loose glitter, colored drinks and messy food near the uniform, plus valuables that can be lost. Leave jewelry at home, since it is not legal to compete in under most rules. Water and clear, light snacks are the only things that belong close to the uniform.

How early should you arrive at a cheer competition?

Arrive 90 minutes to two hours before your performance time to cover check-in, warm-up rotation, a touch-up and the warm-up blocks, with a buffer for the schedule running early. Competitions frequently move ahead of schedule, so treat your listed time as the latest you might perform.

What do cheerleaders wear under their uniform at competition?

A fitted, uniform-approved bodyliner or brief and a sports bra in the color the program specifies, so nothing shows through. A warm-up jacket, joggers and a cover-up go over the uniform until it is time to compete, keeping the athlete warm and the uniform clean until the last minute.
